The Union Club & Library – The oldest cultural organization of Ranchi

The Union Club & Library is the oldest cultural organization of Ranchi, which was established on November 27, 1864. Since then, the organization has been directing numerous social and cultural activities and set a milestone with its unparalleled efforts. This historic organization has become a symbol of cultural and collective contribution of the Bangali community.

As their website says –

To the north-east of the point of union where the Hazaribag Road and the Jail Road join their arms stand the majestic two-storied many-mentioned buildings of the Union Club & Library, Ranchi. The history of the institution, like all histories is a chequered one, a crisscross of light and shade, splashes of colour, light, vivid, arresting that cut across patches of grey and haze and black. As its name signifies the institution came into its present estate as a result of the amalgamation of two separate institutions – the library which came into being in 1864 and the club which was started in 1886 under the appellation Chotanagpur Club but changed its appellation into Union Club in 1896.
